Doctoral students can complete a course CHEM007Z-LZ,
5cr in the International Process Metallurgy Symposium

– Metallurgy as a tool for challenges in circular economy -
The course is open for doctoral students from all countries and universities. Participation in the course is a great opportunity to broad your knowledge in metallurgy and circular economy. During the symposium, doctoral students will meet experts in the metallurgical field from both academia and industry. Students will listen to experts’ presentations and will have an opportunity to discuss variety of scientific topics. IPMS doctoral course also gives an excellent possibility for networking with other doctoral students from different countries and universities.

Please notice that there will be a fee (200 €) for doctoral students to join the symposium. While registering to the Symposium, you will be asked whether you are attending the course. Choose option "Yes" if you willing to attend the course.

There are three steps of the course: Before Symposium, During Symposium and After Symposium. Please familiarize yourself with the instructions for each step presented below.

How to complete the course?
Find 4 journal articles related to topics of presentations. The topics of the presentations can be found in the Symposium program available one the website (soon to be published). You can choose the 4 presenters and topics according to your own interest.

Read selected journal articles carefully through BEFORE the Symposium.

Write down at least 3 questions about each of the topic you have chosen. Remember to ask questions during the symposium.

Actively participating in the whole Symposium, absence during two presentations allowed if necessary, contact University Teacher Anna Klemettinen
CONTACT TEACHING
If possible within the symposium timetable, you should ask some of the preprepared questions you have listed while preparing for the Symposium (check the Before the course section). If not possible, you may try to discuss these questions with presenters during the coffee breaks, lunch breaks or Symposium dinner. It is recommend for each doctoral student to ask at least two questions either in conference or privately during breaks. Remember to make notes which will help you to write the course report and prepare a presentation.
CONTACT TEACHING
Prepare a course report summarizing and reflecting the four topics you have chosen. Length of report 8-10 pages, i.e. ~2 pages / topic. There is no template for the report. Send your report to Anna Klemettinen not later than 24.11.2023.
INDEPENDENT WORK
Prepare about 20 pp-slides of those four topics you have chosen (i.e. ~5 slides / each topic) combining the knowledge that you have learned during the symposium, from scientific articles and by public or private discussions. Make a wider view, build up the framework, e.g. if presentation is about pyrite leaching in gold chloride solution, tell why is this important? What is this related to? What have others done? What are the challenges? What is the big picture?
INDEPENDENT WORK
Present your slides on the Research Seminar in November 2023 (week 48, day and time to be defined later). The Seminar will be organized in a hybrid mode (you can choose whether you are participating online of face-to-face. Your reports and presentation will be evaluated by responsible teachers in the course Anna Klemettinen, Prof. Emer. Pekka Taskinen and Prof. Emer. Olof Forsén.
